Pre-Conference

Sunday November 24th, 2019
10:00am - 4:00pm

CMHO’s Pre-Conference is dedicated to supporting and enhancing effective governance capacity for child and youth mental health agencies both now and into the future. Designed for board members and executive directors, the highly interactive Pre-Conference will bring in expert speakers and provide takeaway tools Boards need to continue to provide effective governance leadership.

Overview

The Boards of CMHO member agencies are required to help their organizations navigate through tremendous changes – from moving to a new Ministry, to the creation of new health system structures in Ontario Health Teams (OHTs) and Ontario Health (OH) - all while trying to keep the focus on increased investments needed to meet the growing demand for CYMH services.

The demand on Boards to provide a steady hand as their organizations navigate these changing waters has never been greater. CMHO’s Pre-Conference session is designed to bring you the information and takeaway tools your Boards need to continue to provide effective governance leadership. Based on advice from CMHO’s Board Member Advisory Group, the speakers and sessions of the day will focus primarily on three topics, detailed below.

Key Topics for the Pre-Conference Governance Sessions

1.  Health System Transformation and Ontario Health Teams:
This session will provide you with the information you need about health system transformation including Ontario Health Teams and Ontario Health, and the potential implications for child and youth mental health and your organization. Big questions such as “what do OHTs mean for governance,” and “what should boards be thinking about in the near, medium and long-term in light of transformation” will be tackled.  Anne Corbett, from Borden Ladner Gervais, a well-respected legal expert, will provide her views on governance structures and timing of changes regarding important areas including funding.

2.  Governance and Integration:
Boards across the province understand that the government has a clearly stated priority to reduce the number of transfer payment agencies in the broader public service. In order to chart their own future, and prevent having a future imposed, Boards know they are expected to lead their organizations towards a more integrated system but many do not understand what this means in practice or where to start. This session will provide take-away tools for boards to identify specific steps they can take around this challenging issue.

3.  Government Relations and the Board:
As health system transformation and the creation of OHTs continue, our organizations must continue to advocate for the mental health needs of kids and families. This session will train board members on their powerful advocacy role and how to engage with local politicians.
